🧺🤝 The Ministry of Women's Affairs was at Petrópolis (RJ) to advance the implementation of public and community laundries in vulnerable areas. The initiative combines free services with training and community interaction.
- Why it matters: The policy reduces the burden of domestic labour on women, especially black and low-income women. It also strengthens support networks and economic autonomy in the territories.
🧠 What's happening: The municipality is in dialogue with the town hall and communities to set up laundries in Serrinha and Alto da Derrubada.
- The units are part of the National Care Plan and offer washing, drying and training.
🔍 Between the lines: The project is committed to care as a structuring policy, not just as a basic service.
- The experience in Caruaru (PE) shows a high social impact, with around 200 people attending every day.
🏃 To summarise: Petrópolis is moving towards adopting a public policy that has already been tested and approved in other territories.
- The proposal combines infrastructure, training and community empowerment.
🖼️ The big picture: R$ 13 million will be invested in 17 laundrettes across the country, in partnership between ministries. The aim is to redistribute care and reduce historical inequalities.
💭 Our opinion: Caring for those you care for is one of the most effective ways of promoting social justice.
